Nyack Farmers Market
Aug 30 @ 8:00 am – 1:00 pm

Broadens Opportunity to Shop Local Harvests and Specialty Foods

Features Family-Friendly Fun Welcomes Customers with Food Stamp Benefits

Good news for foodies, friends and families: the Nyack Chamber of Commerce proudly extends its highly successful Thursday Farmers’ Market to Saturdays beginning on June 7 at 8:00am. Nyack’s first-ever Saturday Farmers’ Market builds on a 17-year commitment to local farmers and specialty food producers, drawing crowds of shoppers to the Village every week — both outdoors in the warm months, and indoors in winter.

The new Market will be open every Saturday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, rain or shine, through November 22 in the municipal parking lot on Main Street at the center of the Village. Live entertainment and fun for kids are weekly Market staples. Free parking is available in the Artopee lot adjacent to the Market, and a new feature will allow shoppers with food stamp benefits to use their EBT cards at the Market.

Opening ceremonies and formal ribbon-cutting will take place at 11:00am on June 7. The Chamber will preside and will be joined by Nyack Mayor Jen Laird-White, Village Trustee Louise Parker, South Nyack Mayor Bonnie Christian, Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart, and New York State Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee.

Music will be provided from 9:00am to 11:00am by acoustic guitarist/vocalist Jesse Frayne.  Jeff Doctorow, guitarist and curator/host of ArtsRock’s popular “Guitar Magic” series, will perform from 11:30 to 1:00 pm with colleagues from The Old No. 7 band, including Lorena Mann on vocals and Jim Kimak on saxes.  Bill Batson, the Market’s artist-in-residence, will add his usual touch of creativity to the proceedings, as will caricatures and face painting offered by Silly Pencils and Jamie’s faces.

Best of all, the Market’s 18 vendors will offer a copious, farm-fresh Spring harvest along with other delights — including cut flowers; free-range eggs; fresh pies and baked goods; honey and maple syrup; specialty teas; artisanal soaps; fine local wines — and more.  For our very best friends, homemade gourmet dog treats will also be on offer every week.

“Today, there’s increasing demand for foods provided by local, eco-friendly farmers, artisans and producers,” said Scott Baird, Nyack Chamber President. “We’re happy to help meet that demand. It’s a great way to boost business in the Village, support healthy lifestyles and protect our environment.”

Both the Thursday and Saturday Markets have a notable new feature: Customers with food stamp benefits can use their EBT cards to purchase tokens that function as cash within the Markets. In addition,  some individual vendors continue to accept other federal and state-sponsored benefits, such as Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits.

“For food stamp customers, their benefits can go farther at the Farmers’ Markets than they may have thought,” said Diane Eggert, Executive Director of the Farmers Market Federation of New York. “Not only are they able to purchase farm-fresh food and specialty products, they have access to vendors and farmers who are ready and willing to share advice, tips and recipes.”

Local farmers and vendors also benefit from increased traffic and sales, and can redeem the tokens for a 100% cash exchange.

“This is a win-win opportunity for everyone involved,” said Pam Moskowitz, manager of the Nyack Farmers’ Markets.  “Now, food stamp customers have access to the freshest, healthiest produce and products our area has to offer.”

The Saturday Farmers’ Market is sponsored by Green Mountain Energy Company (White Plains), Green Meadow Waldorf School (Chestnut Ridge) and RevoluSun (Nyack). Green Mountain is the longest serving retailer of cleaner energy in the U.S. Green Meadow Waldorf School is part of a rapidly growing international movement of Waldorf schools dedicated to a curriculum of innovation and discovery.  RevoluSun installs solar electricity systems in homes and businesses. Media sponsors include Rivertown magazine, Nyack News and Views and Natural Awakenings.

“We appreciate all of our supporters, and look forward to another successful season at the Market,” said Baird. “It’s a great place to stroll, shop and enjoy the fruits of the hard work our local businesses put in every day.”

This farmers’ market, located in the historic Village of Haverstraw
will be open each Sunday, starting June 17th from 9am-1pm

This market is vital to the Greater Haverstraw Community. It’s not just about healthy eating and buying fresh-picked, local produce, it’s about community building. The market is a snapshot of local culture – a place where local residents can come together in a vibrant public space and share in the life of the community. In addition to the usual market items for sale, we regularly feature live music, cooking and other demonstrations, a children’s area, and other activities/events. Please help us spread the word.

Local fruits & vegetables, wild mushrooms, artisanal breads, organic & fair trade coffee, pastries, flea market, plants, prepared foods, clothing, vegan & gluten-free treats, jewelry, herbs, and more!

Outdoor fun doesn’t end on Labor Day in Nyack. The festivities continue into Fall as the Village hosts the Nyack Chamber’s 28th annual SeptemberFest street fair, set for Sunday, September 7th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm — rain or shine. Admission is free.

Families and fun-seekers shouldn’t miss this unique event, featuring over 300 vendors offering fine crafts, jewelry, art, photography, collectibles, antiques, quality handmade crafts, unique gifts and much more. Not to mention the great shops and restaurants in Nyack that will be joining in with special offers.

Lining both Main Street and Broadway in the heart of Nyack, the fair will also feature live entertainment and street performers — plus great fair food, including Greek, Jamaican, Polish and Italian specialties, as well as home-made fudge, dipped pretzels and kettlecorn.

In keeping with Nyack’s cultural roots and vibrant arts community, this year’s fair will include live music onstage in the Main Street parking lot provided by acclaimed local talent and produced by Nyack’s own Anjel Blue Rehearsal Studios and The Nyack Music School. The entertainment will continue throughout the day, featuring Louis Miller, Splash, Danielle Sheri, Monkey Jar and Our Fears.

While grown-ups groove to the music, the fair will offer plenty for the younger set, with special attractions for the kids in the Main Street parking lot.

“SeptemberFest is a great tradition in Nyack,” says Scott Baird, President of the Nyack Chamber. “For over a quarter century, this fair has anchored the Fall season’s vibrant, outdoor cultural life in Nyack. It underscores our key message: Nyack is a great place to live, work, do business — and play.”

Business owners who want to rent a booth at the fair should go to www.woodwill.com, or call Woodwill Corporation at 631-234-4183. For information about the Chamber, go to www.nyackchamber.org or contact The Chamber at 845-353-2221.
